Last Night's Book Slam...
...So I finally made my way down to Neighbourhood in The Grove to check out Patrick Neate's Book Slam, and it was kinda cool....
Who am I kidding? (I'm so modest this morning...must be this winter chill. Makes you sad).
It was HEAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who'd a thought a cold night of literature, music and thai food (again lol) could be so inspiring? Three cheers Neate. Three cheers!
The line-up kicked off with poet Lemn Sissay, who I'd never heard of before, but his bumbling rants about society and race were rather amusing (he did bumble alot though...I kinda got it, but then sometimes didn't?). But what followed next was my favourite moment of the evening. Political activist/comic Mark Thomas read from his new book, Belching Out the Devil (which takes on the big giant that is Coca-Cola), and his anecdotal comic routine was HILARIOUS. Very animated, very passionate....like, I bought into the hype...I'm copping BOTH of his books (the other being, As Used On The Famous Nelson Mandela: Underground Adventures Into the Arms and Torture Trade - again, introduced with another outlandish story about his research).
Lastly was the adorable folk singer Lail Arad (like, stupendously adorable, but wry...I wouldn't be surprised if she arrived on bicycle with a basket full of roses, puppies and pocket knifes).
My favourite song was Winter, but hit up her MySpace to hear it yourself. She's that fabulous.

Thai and Laura Izibor
Last night, I was in the ever-enjoyable but much long-overdue company of Tappy @ Atlantic and her crew to tuck into some quality Thai (thanks to Patara) and check out a brief PA from her new artist Laura Izibor...
But first the Thai...I make note of this particular din-din because of the good conversation, mainly circulating around the Jay-Z doc, a rapper named Giggs, the Mobos (and why I'm still blacklisted lol ) and the US election....the possibility of us getting together for a pre-mature Obama party on the 4th...whatever happens, I'm there. Won't really be celebrating on the 5th if he loses, though. I'll probably be somewhere busting a window on the sly.
Anywho, Laura. Very delightful...she's Irish with American inflections and musically, she reminds me (I know the comparison is lazy, but whatever...) of Terri Walker, Joss Stone and Alicia Keys...but mainly Walker. She's a sassy little thing and I imagine she's heading for the big time. Did I say she was gorgeous too??

Live Review: Robin Thicke @ Shepherd's Bush Empire
Rather good show :)

Jay-Z: He Came, He Saw, He Conquered
For those who might know a penny about Jigga, I thought this BBC1 documentary was more than insightful; the archive footage of his early rise, the concert clips…the interviews with the sister and various members of the entourage; Diddy.
It was cool. But MAN – you could really do a SERIES on Jay-Z IMO. I could be biased really and still regard Reasonable Doubt as his best record ever….so I never really got caught up in his celebrity…
BUT – it was a good un’. Well done Yentob.
If you didn’t see it, check it out here (isn’t iPlayer just genius!)

Faith, growth and Life
It's been a while since I've done a 'me' blog...Alot's been going down, life's been taking a new shape and it's been...strange, painful, exhilarating and intriguing. The biggest change has been the re-definition of my faith, a process that's still taking place (so forgive me if this blog seems a little pre-mature or muddled - sometimes you just have to get these things off your chest, ya GET me? Therapy and all that).
FACT: In the past, I've hidden in my work because that way, I can escape living.
To put it simple - my work, my writing, my teaching. The outcome is guaranteed...I know that when I put pen to paper, fingers to keyboard, voice to masses, I can control how witty, serious, cumbersome, convulted, simplistic I can be. I create a world in which I'm the queen and every day is laughs and Krispy Kreme donuts, I don't gain weight and my name is occasionally in lights. I'm half-decent at what I do. Yet, such a fantasy prevents me from embracing the reality that the party of life sometimes runs out of booze...Jesus isn't always around to top up the wine, and while he's there instead to help you through the hangover, I sometimes prefer the shiraz...it hurts less...I'm quite sensitive to pain. But then - I wouldn't be LIVING!
FACT: I'm incredibly naive, but I'm getting it.
I blame old people for not being around me enough to explain that growth isn't as gradual as I thought it was....they should have talked me through what a quarter-life or mid-life crisis actually means (I've done quarter-life, weaves, extra make-up and all, but obviously not the the elderly phase...but when it does happen to myself or loved ones, I will play along because it really is all good. God knows. Never again can I secretly cuss a 40-year-old for cutting her hair like Rihanna and pretending her stretch-marks aren't visible through her "skinny" jeans. WORK IT! Because after all...death is just that little bit closer :) Cynical, maybe? Nope. Just real methinks...
FACT: I'm strange and peculiar
...And that's a good thing. The good Lord says that I'm wonderfully and fearfully made, meaning there's just one me and I'm content in not trying to be like other people, which I might have done subconsciously...like, that whole India.Arie thing. I don't REALLY look like her, and yet because I've played up to that neo-soul vibe for years, the tag has just stuck. Yes, sometimes I shave my legs and sometimes I don't - but I really just am me. Matilda, Milly. Matty if you act right :)
FACT: I want to teach the world to sing
Ok...that's actually a cliche...BUT - I want to help the world. People. Rich, poor, sad, lonely. Preferably, I'd like to go Africa or Asia and do films and take pictures and write about people. And spread the love of Jesus. Because that's real. I was reading Matthew yesterday and realised that even though Jesus wanted to mourn the death of his cousin John (the Baptist), he had so much love for people that he forgot about his needs for a moment to heal people- and feed them to boot. (that's all up in Matthew 14:23, onwards), and while I know that kind of compassion comes at a price, I want it. In fact, I need it...mmmm....I do.
I could go on and on and I plan too - there's a part two on the way, but all these revelations have forced me to rest my faith in new things, different things. The great won't always happen....it CAN happen, but it won't always, because the world just isn't build that way. Heaven, yes. Earth, no. I can't explain why, right now, I know of four people of people who've suffered a stroke (two of those people being in my family)....and my old faith couldn't prevent that from happening. I don't know why I can care for people a whole lot, and my old faith wasn't wise enough to accept that they can still hurt me. AND - for the life of me, I'm still trying to work out if there's such a thing as happily ever afters in my generation, or if that just applied to the 1930s...I mean, really?
Thinking alot of thoughts...
It's a good place to be in.

Review: Africa Rising Festival, Royal Albert Hall, London - The Independent

John Legend, jet lag and Africa Rising
Right - so the last few days have been a bit of a flurry of deadlines and social activities off the back of weekend in Tampa which left me jetlagged, I managed to oversleep this morning.
Ouch and shame.
Anywho....Monday's gig was very nice...I've never been a fan of the Legend just because of my first impression of the guy...playing keys for Kanye West a few years back, he strolled on the stage with some much arrogance I just wanted to slap him. Hard. But, I've let by-gones be by-gones... He was great and I look forward to the album.

But last night's Africa Rising....
Oh dear.
In spite of the hoo haa and shallow albeit noble attempt at "raising awareness of Africa" - this is what I observed:
1) There are alot of well-to-do Nigerians in London, gorgeous and colourful and very weave-tastic. I am not one of them. In fact, I do feel compelled to take a blood test to actually establish if there's actually Naija blood running these vains, or I'm in fact from Sierra Leone, like I always suspected :). I'm just not that fly.
2) I'm very African-American, but I knew this already - it just supports my prior point, but I thought I'd reiterate it for my own sake.
3) Naija men are bold, brash, rich and HUNGRY. Hmmmmmm...
4) Seal is the MAN...like, he was always the Man...but truly..."Solitary bruttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttha! Is there still a part of you that wants to LIVE?????" TUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNE! In fact...Seal, I salute you:
5) Trevor Nelson is fantastic, so much so, I could tell he didn't want to be there.
6) Colin Powell, is also, the Man...like, some needs to teach him the Chicken noodle soup...he's just that fly:
7) Christina Aguilera's getting paid.
Finally, I just want to jump on my soap-box for a moment...but if we TRULY want to help Africa, surely we should just go there instead of party in the Royal Albert Hall without the decency to even take up a collection? DANG.

The Foreign Exchange - Leave It All Behind
Long-awaited new LP drops TODAY!!!! And it's BIG....

Annie Leibowitz - Nothing left to hide
Quite an intriguing feature in this weekend's Sunday Times...I've only known of her vaguely i.e through those odd infamous shots (if not all of them?lol)...and the Rolling Stones gig, which is my reason to buy the biography (if there is one). Realising I have a deeper desire to pursue reportage through my photography, this woman needs to become my muse.

Ironik - No Point In Wasting Tears
